On May 10, 2007, Time Magazine reported that Hillary’s stump speech included the lines: “I was born into a middle class family in the middle of the country in the middle of the last century.”
After Penn’s memos were released to the media this week; Hillary’s people spread the word that she did not take Penn’s advice. But it is evident that she did.

By having Hillary speak in prime time on the second night of the convention and Bill on the third, Obama is handing over both days to the Clintons. The average viewer could be forgiven for thinking that Hillary had won the nomination and that the convention was about her.
Most candidates need to gain ten points during their convention. That’s the average. Usually you pick up one point on Monday, two on Tuesday, two on Wednesday and five on Thursday when the candidate himself speaks. While Obama is, indeed, planning an extravaganza for his outdoor speech, hsi gains during the early days will be muted at best. The Clintons are hijacking his convention.
How did they do it? They bargained hard and even had their good friend and book agent Bill Barnett designated and the mediator to handle the talks with the Obama campaign. And they pulled off quite a coup!

On October 3, 1938, Adolf Hitler’s armies marched into Sudetenland, a part of Czechoslovakia. Germany said it was responding to separatist demands from the large German population that lived there and that she was merely honoring their desire for reunion with Germany. Hitler’s tanks took over a vital part of an independent country that had largely rejected his overtures and allied itself with the West. Neither Britain nor France nor the United States did a thing to stop him.

The conventional wisdom has it down pat: A bad economy works against the candidate from the party in power, as voters take out their rage and fear on the president’s party and back the challenger, just like they did in 1992. But this isn’t a normal economic slowdown (or recession), and Obama isn’t a normal challenger. We think the conventional wisdom may be dead wrong.

The agenda for the Democratic National Convention makes it, effectively, a two day convention for Hillary and a one day convention for Obama. The Democratic candidate, who needs all the national buildup a four day convention normally affords, will have to cut it short because of the Clintons’ skill in hogging the limelight on Tuesday night, when Hillary speaks, and on Wednesday night, when Bill does. So until Obama himself addresses the delegates and the nation on Thursday night, this is really a Clinton convention.
Why did the Clintons so want to got the stage? Because they want to do everything they can get away with to assure an Obama defeat in November so that Hillary can run against an aged McCain in 2012. She could capitalize on an Obama defeat by saying “I told you so” to primary voters.
Why did Obama allow it? Because the Clintons showed that they can make no end of trouble for him. Hillary leaked a video of her speech at a closed fund raiser talking about the need to her delegates to feel that their voices were heard and Bill said he didn’t think anybody could really be said to ready to be president (despite the fact that Hillary’s slogan was “ready to lead”).
The Clintons will continue to bedevil Obama all fall. Hillary will be outspoken in her support while Bill quietly cuts his throat with seemingly unscripted and apparently undisciplined cracks and non sequiturs. But every one of them will be planned and rehearsed to hurt Obama without seeming to have done so.

In the first real time foreign policy crisis to take place after the primary elections, we find Barack Obama appeasing Russian imperialism. Obama said he strongly condemned “the outbreak of violence in George” and urged “an immediat end to armed conflict.” He said “now is the time for Georgia and Russia to show restraint and to avoid an escalation into full scale war.” He called for direct talks and urged that Georgia’s “territorial integrity…be respected.”
McCain told it like it is noting that “Russian military forces crossed an internationally recognized border into the sovereign territory of Georga.” He called for Russia to “immediately and unconditionally cease its military operations” and pull out its forces.
The difference is huge. Some appeasers are saying that Georgia, not Russia was the first to send in tanks to South Ossetia. They say this was provacative. But when the Russians made trouble on the border, Georgia was right to send in tanks to its own territory to defend it. Then when the Russians attacked in force, McCain rightly called in an invasion while Obama spoke as if there was a mutuality of blame.
This is such a good indication of why McCain must be president and not Obama.

Barack Obama had it half right when he said that the McCain campaign would focus on raising vot ers’ fears about him.
He was wrong in saying that the chief point of attack would be that he “doesn’t look like all those other presidents on dollar bills.” He wishes that were it.

If soccer moms determined the outcome of the 1996 presidential race and security moms tipped the balance in 2004, it is beginning to look as if older moms are the key to the 2008 contest. Obama has a problem among women over 40 and a big problem among women over 50. These groups, normally the staunchest of Democratic supporters, are showing a propensity to back McCain and a disinclination to support Obama.

The most important pri mary for our 2008 elec tion may be yet to come - the Kadima Party primary in Israel in mid or late September. It pits liberal-leaning Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni against hardliner and former Army Chief of Staff Shaul Mofaz. (Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is expected to sit out the contest and concentrate on staying out of jail.)
The polls are neck and neck; in the most recent, Livni’s once-formidable lead has shrunk to 2 points. Hanging over the battle is the Iranian nuclear program.
